Wing foil vs kitesurf for beginners in Dubai

Wing foil vs kitesurf for beginners in Dubai

Both sports use wind and a board at the same two beaches. They do not use the same first hour.

Kitesurfing

A kite on 20-odd metres of line. More power, more safety systems to learn, more ways to get dragged. Once it clicks you can ride in a wider wind range and you have a sport you can take to other countries without hiring a foil shop. The pathway is longer. Budget the 10-hour private block if you want independence.

Wing foiling

The wing is in your hands. No lines across the beach. Easier to put down. The foil under the board is the new problem — balance and a sharp wing in shallow water. Jebel Ali’s lagoon helps because you can fall onto water that is not a reef. Many people get a first glide sooner than a first kite waterstart. They also buy more hours later chasing a clean foil.

Which to book first

Never been on the water and a bit nervous — wing taster. Already comfortable in the sea and you like the look of big air later — kite. Done a bit of both on holiday — tell us the truth and we will not make you restart the wrong syllabus.

You can switch

A wasted taster is AED 300. A wasted 10-hour block in the sport you do not enjoy is not. Start small.
